Hemp extract is the ingredient or material that is derived from extracting the plant compounds from hemp, and is the material that contains high levels of naturally occurring cannabidiol (CBD).

Full spectrum hemp extract, which is a primary ingredient in all of our formulations, contains a number of beneficial plant compounds. The bulk of these compounds are known as “phytocannabinoids,” with cannabidiol (CBD) being the most abundant in our products as well as one of the most well-known and studied. These compounds have been shown to interact with a receptor system that all higher organisms, including dogs and cats, have, called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Products containing CBD, in addition to other minor cannabinoids, can enhance the tone and functioning of the ECS to achieve optimal functioning. So, in other words, hemp-derived CBD products help your pet’s ECS to operate like it should.

CBD (cannabidiol) is a natural compound (phytocannabinoid) found in the cannabis plant family, which includes hemp. It is one of the most beneficial phytocannabinoids found in the cannabis family and is present in high concentrations in the hemp plant, specifically, in the flowers of the hemp plant.

[Time for a short biology lesson.] The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is an evolutionarily old receptor system that has been identified in all higher organisms. It consists primarily of cannabinoid receptor subtypes 1 and 2 (CB1 and CB2), as well as endocannabinoids (cannabinoids produced naturally by an organism), and degradation and synthesis enzymes. Studies have shown that the ECS is involved in a number of physiological processes, all of which are directed towards maintaining equilibrium within an organism. This state of equilibrium, which is also called homeostasis, helps the organism function appropriately and optimally. In short, the ECS is a very important receptor system found in all organisms the functions to keep the organism working properly.

In December of 2018, Congress passed what is known as the 2018 Farm Bill, which clarified some of the legal uncertainties about hemp-derived products. First, the 2018 Farm Bill recognizes hemp as a commodity, removes it from the definition of “marijuana” under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), and once implemented, allows states the option to regulate its production. In other words, the new Farm Bill makes Farm Bill-compliant industrial hemp legal without question and allows each state the opportunity to regulate it in the manner it sees fit, so long as it is consistent with the 2018 Farm Bill. Most importantly, the 2018 Farm Bill broadened the definition of industrial hemp to explicitly remove derivatives of the plant, including any phytocannabinoids found in industrial hemp (including THC, so long as its presence is under the 0.3% threshold to meet the Farm Bill definition of “industrial hemp”) from the CSA. Thus, state compliant, industrial hemp-derived Mary’s Tails products which contain naturally occurring CBD and other cannabinoids are lawful under the new 2018 Farm Bill. Currently, all of Mary’s Tails products are created under a Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) permit, so our finished products are manufactured lawfully under Colorado and Federal law.

Full spectrum hemp extract is the material derived from the flowers of the hemp plant, where the beneficial compounds are concentrated. The extract contains all compounds found naturally occurring in the plant, including cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. By providing all these therapeutic hemp compounds, the hope is to utilize all that the plant has to offer and maximize the overall well-being of your dog or cat. Broad spectrum hemp extracts are similar to full spectrum products, however, they have been processed further to remove any residual THC. This process tends to denature the product which can impact the efficacy of the benefits. Isolates are 99% pure CBD which contain exclusively the CBD molecule. This material is highly processed to remove many of the other compounds that could potentially provide therapeutic benefit to your pet.

There is no such thing as “full spectrum CBD.” Full spectrum, as it pertains to hemp extract, relates to the total presence of all phytocannabinoids (including CBD), terpenes, and flavonoids found in the hemp plant. In other words, CBD is a component of full spectrum hemp extract, and can’t itself be “full spectrum.” The use of the phrase “full spectrum CBD” is a misnomer frequently used by those who don’t fully understand the extraction process.

We source our hemp from our partner farms in Loveland, Colorado. All of the hemp used to produce our products is grown under the Colorado Department of Agriculture certified hemp program. Grown under Colorado’s 300 annual days of sunshine, the hemp used to make our products contains a very high cannabidiol profile for the best benefits to your pets.

At Mary’s, we pride ourselves on our scientific expertise and transparency. Our GMP compliant manufacturing facility is equipped with a High-Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC). The HPLC is a complex and sensitive chemical instrument that allows us to test for potency throughout the entire manufacturing process. This allows us the ability to guarantee our products all have accurate and consistent potencies. In addition to our internal testing, we validate all of our final products through 3rd party accredited testing laboratories for potency as well as ensuring they are free from pesticides, heavy metals, microbials and residual solvents. Mary’s Chief Scientist, Jeremy Riggle, Ph.D., directs a Research and Development team focused on creating products with the highest quality and efficacy. Products are formulated specifically to meet the unique needs of dogs and cats. All of our products are tested extensively for palatability and overall efficacy, in addition to the quality testing mentioned above.

At Mary’s, our Colorado-based partner farm and processor extracts only female hemp flowers and utilizes cryogenic, organic, GMO-free, food grade alcohol. This extraction method provides a natural material that ensures we are able to extract and utilize all the benefits of the hemp plants and their associated compounds. We go a step further for our dog and cat products. Our extracts are subsequently filtered in order to remove any residual resins, waxes and tannins. These components can lead to a bitter tasting extract. This is very important to ensure your dogs and cats enjoy the taste of our products. Finally, we ensure every batch of extract is free from any residual alcohol before it is formulated into our products. Again, our aim at Mary’s is to provide a clean, safe, and effective product that you can trust.

Mary’s Tails products are intended to support your pet’s endocannabinoid system. They are not intended to treat, cure or mitigate any disease. Making these claims violate the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act because the FDA has yet to consider approval of its use as a drug or supplement.

The serving amount is dependent on many variables and no two animals are the same. Every product page here on the site provides a guideline for usage on your pet? Factors that could impact the amount of CBD to give your furry friend are: Weight, Gastrointestinal Health, Age, Breed, Indication, Metabolism, Delivery Method, Endocannabinoid System (ECS ) Tone. Finding the right serving amount is individual. The right amount lives on a bell curve for optimal performance. Once the optimal amount is found for your individual animal, there is little, if any, benefit to providing more. We suggest starting with 1 mg / 10lbs of your pet’s body weight twice daily and increase until you find the desired results.

Tinctures should be administered twice daily. Transdermal Gel Pen can be administered up to 6 times per day. The Balm can be used as much as your pet needs.

We recommend administering any ingestible Mary’s Tail product with food.

Some pets see results within 45 minutes with our tincture and within 15 minutes when using the gel pen. Best results may be seen when dedicated to a regime of twice daily for 14 days. Since CBD is a part of your pet’s wellness routine, we recommend daily use for optimal benefits.

Yes, all our products are naturally grain free and gluten free.

Our products work best when used together as a total cannabinoid routine. Oil and capsules should be used daily in the morning and evening. The Transdermal Gel Pen should be used throughout the day to help keep your pet happy, healthy, and calm. The balm should be used daily for skin nourishment.

We filter our pet hemp extract through a unique process to remove tannins, waxes and resins. This produces an extract that is more palatable as dogs and cats have enhanced senses compared to humans. Additionally, limonene, a terpene commonly found in hemp, can be toxic to cats, so we ensure our products are free of limonene. We utilize very simple formulations for pets to ensure we have no adverse reactions to complex ingredients.

All animals have an ECS, so they will see the benefits of hemp extract regardless of age. We always recommend consulting a veterinarian before starting to use our products.

We recommend you administer orally twice daily. Simply squeeze the top of the dropper to pull the metered amount of oil for your dog’s or cat’s daily serving. Our droppers are accurately graduated with volumes at .25 ml, .5 ml, .75 ml and 1 ml. Once you have the desired amount of oil in the dropper, open your dog or cat’s mouth and dispense the oil in the mouth. It is important to administer twice daily so you can maintain the benefits of CBD for your pet. Be sure to clean the dropper between use. If you are having trouble administering the tinctures orally, we suggest adding it to your pet’s food or on a treat. Our favorite is to add the oil to a freeze dried or dehydrated treat.

Although best applied orally, it is perfectly fine to apply our oil to food or treats.

Our patented transdermal application offers a unique and attractive delivery method of cannabinoids for dogs and cats. Simply remove cap and twist bottom of pen counterclockwise to unlock. Depress bottom of pen once to dispense the metered amount. Apply gel to the skin on the inside flap of your pet's ear. Twist bottom of pen clockwise to lock, and replace cap. Apply as needed. We love this application because the whole process is calming for you and your pet. They really feel the love.

“Transdermal delivery” is the process of applying ingredients to the skin and delivering the benefits of the ingredients into the body to provide total body support rather than localized support as seen from the benefits of the Balm. There are many benefits and advantages to delivering cannabinoids this way, especially for dogs and cats. Mary’s has been a leader in transdermal cannabinoid application. So much so that we have a patent on our formulations!

Cleanse the area before application. Twist bottom of container to dispense more balm. Rub gently on your pet's skin, nose or paws. The Balm is perfect for all season protection to help nourish and repair damaged or irritated skin.

No, topical balms, lotions, and salve products do not have transdermal properties. Transdermal and topical, although often conflated, mean entirely different things. As mentioned above, transdermal products are designed to get through the skin for whole body support. Meanwhile, topical products, like the Hemp Extract Balm, works wonders on the skin to help nourish and repair the skin where it is applied.
